Lea Salonga and Jose Llana sing “The Mountain’s Heart,” a new
duet from Allegiance that was added for the July 2011 NYC
Workshop. In this moment of the show, James has just told
Gloria that he is signing up for the all-Japanese American unit,
the 442nd Regimental Brigade–the most decorated unit in the
War. The news is shocking to Gloria, but she accepts it
with grace and courage. A fan favorite, this was a special
performance by Lea and Jose at the Cast Party prior to the NYC
Workshop, held at the Lucille Lortel Cabaret.
A fan favorite, I Haven’t Got A Prayer - sung by
Allie
Trimm - was originally conceived as a confessional of a
young girl, Hannah,
who is discovering her feelings for Sam,
an internee boy at Heart Mountain Relocation Center, where her
father serves as camp director. Allie performed the
original version of this song at a screening of the October 2010

At the heart of Allegiance is the idea that, no matter what
terrible events have transpired, no matter how desperate or awful
things have been in times past, it’s never too late to have a
second chance to love, a second chance to hope, and a second
chance to make things right.
In this video, Lea
Salonga performs an early iteration of the song before
long-time supporters of the show in Honolulu, Hawaii at a
reception held by host and Allegiance co-producer, Mark
Mugiishi. Second Chances closes the show and brings a
message of hope to Old
Sam, played by George Takei, even in the twilight of his
life. The lyrics to the song have since developed and
changed, but the heart of the message remains the same.
Tony Award® Winner Lea
Salonga (Miss Saigon, Les Miz) and Broadway’s Telly
Leung (Glee, Rent, Flower Drum Song) perform a duet version
of Gaman, from the upcoming Broadway musical, Allegiance.
”Gaman” means “to perservere with dignity and fortitude”
and was a common phrase and sentiment during the internment
years.
Act I of
Allegiance ends with a wallop from Young
Sam, who has just learned devastating news. In this
early version of the Act One closer, after hearing the news, Sam
takes the news as a sign that he must now step forward and shine,
in a ballad entitled My Time Now. Subsequent iterations
of the show led to a repurposing and reconception of the Act One
closer, which changed title to Show Me The Way.
